The 3 things you NEED to know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Diesel

In East Sussex we have encountered an increasing number of instances of AdBlue contamination wherein a motorist has put AdBlue inside their diesel tank. This is to a certain extent as a result of people not being totally sure how to to make use of (remember: it is not a fuel additive), and in part due to the fact that the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are frequently directly near to each other on the vehicle.

So, what exactly is the matter with having AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Since AdBlue is primarily deionised water, it is actually just like putting water in your tank. Diesel and water don't mix in the least and attempting to run a diesel car on water is not going to work. Also, the urea is fairly corrosive to fuel system lines and seals and is prone to crystallisation, blocking injectors and filters. If you find you put AdBlue into your fuel tank get it drained right away. And of course be careful not to start the motor - not even to shift it off the pump. If perhaps you have started the vehicle you will very likely need to have the complete fuel system purged and filters replaced.

Whenever you end up in this situation don’t fret or panic! Contact us, the UK’s Number 1 fuel contamination business. Our engineers possess the specialised expertise and working experience to have you back on the road promptly and efficiently, no mess, no hassle.

Wrong Fuel in Car in TN31 Postcode - Brede Misfueling

What a fantastic night's sleep! 7:30 am on a bright Tuesday and we were en route to help an older lovely lady who put petrol in her diesel uncle's Smart Fortwo in Brede. I'd been advised she had left the petrol station and was broken down in a backwater road en route to see her grandchildren. I got her location plugged straight into the TomTom and got there inside an hour or so. I got to the car and removed the contaminated fuel from the car. While I was doing it she said, "I'm getting relatively absent-minded in my senior years and did not remember about the car working with diesel because I'd only just bought it a couple of days back because my old one, which I used for in excess of 25 years, eventually died". I got the job done and she offered me a toffee and said thank you. What a precious East Sussex lady!

Wrong Fuel Assist Brede - Wrong Fuel in Car Brede

I'd had a great evening fishing on the weekend and felt cheerful with myself the next working day as I headed out to help a new family on vacation in Brede. They had broken down after putting the wrong fuel in their dark blue Mazda B-Series Plus, and the car was roughly half an hour's travel away. I turned up at their car and smirked while I listened to the lady telling her husband off for turning out to be so silly. "How could you conceivably manage to fill up with the wrong fuel?" she asked him. I wanted to clarify that this happens all the time in East Sussex and that it's absolutely nothing to be concerned about, and yet he still had his ear bent. Unfortunate chap. Anyhow, I cleaned up and removed all of the polluted fuel, gave the fuel system a flush and filled it up with the correct fuel. As they drove away I shouted hasta la vista and pondered on what her indoors would ask me if ever I made the very same mistake... I'd never live it down!

All of our technicians are competent on the most current vehicles and their fuel systems. We do well over 4 thousand wrong fuel removals on an annual basis in the UK (absolutely yes, there are that many customers who also make the mistake - you are certainly not alone). Wrong Fuel in Car London - Petrol in Diesel Car Brede

No one likes conking out in a car with the incorrect fuel in the middle of the street. One of our most recent customers who filled up her tank with the wrong fuel (stylish Cadillac Brougham) in Brede had exactly that crisis: "WrongFuelSOS.com's fuel drain guy helped me remove my car from the live lane. He had it drained and had it going after only 30 minutes. Couldn't recommend you more."

Wrong Fuel Doctor Brede - Fuel Rescue Brede

This really was what we call the night shift. It was about 2am and almost noone was around. It was pretty dead up to now, and Paul and I were loafing about looking through several old magazines. That was an unusual calm time in East Sussex. It was indeed that calm that when the phone ultimately rang it made me jump! The motorist explained: "I've just ended my overnight shift and incredibly filled petrol in my light green Vauxhall Astra by mistake". I got him to let us know where exactly the vehicle was located and we set off, reaching him in Brede half an hour later. The fuel was cleaned from the motor and he thanked us profusely for getting there so promptly. While we were heading back home we spotted two young ladies on the edge of the highway who seemed like they suffered a puncture. As a result we pulled up and helped them change it, much to their delight.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
